Governor Kathy Hochul today announced the completion of a $ 6.9 million preventative maintenance project on State Route 5 from Big Tree Road to Kane Street in the City of Hamburg and the City of Lackawanna in Erie County. The project improved mobility and road safety on this vital corridor for motorists and pedestrians.

Pedestrian safety was a priority along this busy corridor. New ramps for sidewalks and wheelchairs were built to meet the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Pedestrian signaling equipment has been upgraded with modern pedestrian pushbuttons and countdown timers that will alert walkers when they can expect the traffic light to change.
The project included rehabilitating the pavement of State Route 5 by milling the existing surface, making the necessary repairs and surfacing of the pavement to provide a new wearing surface that will extend the useful life of the pavement. highway. This cost effective treatment will ensure a nominal pavement life of five years. Paving is keeping New York’s freeways in good condition, and this investment delays the need for more expensive deep repairs in the future.
New pavement markings, traffic signs and signals have been installed on State Route 5 within the project boundaries.
A 2,300-foot-long waterline section on State Route 5, owned by the Erie County Water Authority, was also replaced by a municipal improvement agreement as part of this project, to improve performance and system reliability.
“Transportation improvements, such as the rehabilitation of Route 5, are essential to support access to business and commerce for all members of the communities we serve,” New York State Department of Transportation commissioner Marie-Thérèse Dominguez said. “These corridor upgrades are an example of how DOT is making critical investments in our highways while improving the reliability of our transportation system for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.”
