Raspberry Pi Pico Handheld emulates ZX Spectrum and C64

Raspberry Pi computers, even the small Raspberry Pi Zero, have long been used as emulators. Using software like RetroPie (see how to install RetroPie on a Raspberry Pi), you can run games and apps from old computers dating back to the 1970s and 80s.

Unlike other Raspberry Pi SBCs, which run Linux on chips of at least 1 GHz (often 2.5 GHz), the Raspberry Pi Pico is a relatively simple microcontroller that does not have an operating system on its RP2040 processor. dual-core 133 MHz. Nonetheless, since the Pico released in January, we’ve seen it used for some impressive emulation projects, including one that turns the $ 4 card into a Nintendo NES.

Now Twitter user @bobricius developed a custom PCB that attaches to a Raspberry Pi Pico and turns it into a ZX Spectrum / Commodore 64, complete with an integrated gamepad. A project called M.CU.ME (Multi CompUter Machine Emulator) is the core of this release, and it is used as a software layer to run old applications.

The SBC has both a controller and an integrated LCD display. The controller is wired directly to the Raspberry Pi Pico and has a separate piece of buttons for movement, and a few for controlling in-game events.

In addition to having a built-in display, you can connect all of this setup to an external monitor, which the project aims to power through the addition of a VGA connector. As demonstrated below, you can see the project output the video to the monitor and actually play some of the games.

While this isn’t a commercial project that will go into production, it is just a fun and creative way to use the Raspberry Pi Pico platform to bring the ’80s gaming experience back to life and return. Where it all began.
