Ubuntu 21.10 and Windows 11 will arrive next month, with public release dates October 14 for the first and about a week to October 5 for Windows 11. As such, a recent comparison by Phoronix between the next two systems d exploitation has been carried out. that was showing both locking horns, but Windows was mostly losing big when it did.
Today, the performance of Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 (WSL 2) on Windows 11 has been tested against Ubuntu 21.10 and Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. The material used in the test bench is the same as that used the last time which consists of:
The reference suite consists of various workstation and HPC workloads. It is observed that WSL 2 on Windows 11 for the most part performs quite well against Ubuntu in moderately CPU intensive situations. However, it does take a bit of a lag when memory and I / O systems come into play or for heavy CPU workloads, as shown in the pictures below:
But all is not bad for WSL 2 on Windows 11 as it even manages to beat Ubuntu 21.10 and 20.04 LTS by a large margin in the Nginx web server benchmark.
Overall, out of a total of 130 tests, Windows 11 WSL 2 is about 6-7% slower than Ubuntu 21.10 and slightly slower compared to Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. Keep in mind, however, that the version of Windows 11 tested here belongs to the Dev channel, and performance may be different from the public version of Windows that will be released next month.
You can find the full performance review with much more testing on the Phoronix site linked below.
