Rumors have been circulating for some time that Microsoft was planning to unveil something new for combing back on Xbox Series X / S, and today they delivered. The announced new FPS Boost feature will increase the frame rate of some backward compatible games without any kind of fixes or updates from the developers being required. The new initiative starts small with just five games (Far Cry 4, Watch Dogs 2, Super Lucky’s Tale, Sniper Elite 4, and UFC 4) supported, but that’s just the start.

Here’s what Microsoft had to say about the new FPS Boost feature …

With some backward compatible titles, we can make the experience even better, all without any work required by the developer and no updates required by the player. To that end, the backward compatibility team has developed FPS Boost, which uses a variety of new methods to nearly double (and in a few cases quadruple) the original frame rate on some titles. Higher and more stable frame rates make games visually smoother, resulting in more immersive gameplay.

We’re excited to announce that the first backward compatible titles that will support FPS Boost – available starting today – are Far Cry 4, New Super Lucky’s Tale, Sniper Elite 4, UFC 4, and Watch Dogs 2. We have chose this first collection of titles. not only because they are popular with fans, but to highlight several different ways that FPS Boost can improve your experience. For example, New Super Lucky’s Tale can now run at up to 120 fps (fps) and UFC 4 offers improved framerate performance specifically on Xbox Series S and can now run at 60fps.

You will optionally be able to choose to enable or disable FPS Boost from the Manage Game menu (although I’m not sure why you wouldn’t want that).

Tech Managers at Digital Foundry have already tested FPS Boost on all five games that support it so far. Check out their findings below.

What do you think? Will FPS Boost make you play other older games on the Xbox Series X / S?
